Community Ministries

The Social Ministry Committee of Good Shepherd leads the congregation's outreach to those in the community who are in need of food, clothing, shelter, and other kinds of aid.

Food Pantry

The church maintains a food pantry to handle requests from needy persons in the community. The third Sunday of each month is Food Pantry Sunday, and Good Shepherd members support this ministry by donating non-perishable foodstuffs. Periodically, excess food is donated to Harvest Hope Food Bank, God's Storehouse, and Hannah House.

Fun Fridays

Fun Fridays are generally held the second Friday of every other month to allow persons with developmental disabilities to get together for a meal and fun, often theme-based activities, such as Valentine's Day or Halloween. Between 30 and 35 people usually participate, and they are hosted and assisted by more than a dozen Good Shepherd members. These events also allow the participants' caregivers an evening of free time.

Health Ministry

Under the guidance of a volunteer parish nurse, this ministry works to provide a variety of information and services to congregation members to aid their physical well-being. This person also coordinates collection of items such as shoes, blankets, and travel-size soap and shampoo for various shelters in the area.

Meals on Wheels

Good Shepherd members have a more than 20-year tradition of supporting this program, which provides a hot lunch each weekday for homebound persons. The number of recipients to which meals are delivered by Good Shepherd volunteers fluctuates between seven and ten.

Operation Inasmuch

Good Shepherd is a leader in this Synod-wide program which provides opportunities for community service on a scheduled Saturday. Our congregation initiated this program in South Carolina, and it has since expanded throughout the Synod. Good Shepherd received an award from United Cerebral Palsy of South Carolina for its efforts in Operation Inasmuch.

Salvation Army

Good Shepherd supports the Salvation Army Christmas projects by dressing stuffed bears and filling Christmas stockings for distribution to needy children at Christmastime. Congregation members also volunteer for a day of "bell ringing" to collect donations for the Christmas kettle.

School Supply Drive

During the summer, Good Shepherd members collect boxes of school supplies for the Cooperative Ministry to give to needy children prior to the start of school.

Wheelchair Ramp Ministry

A dedicated group of Good Shepherd members builds wheelchair ramps at homes in the community. In 2011, 16 Good Shepherd members participated in building seven ramps, which was the most built to date in one year.
