Small Groups - Fall 2016

Fall 2016 Small Groups

The Small Group Ministries Task Force is launching five new small groups this fall to give each of us a chance to grow through new experiences. Led by our fellow members, each group will meet monthly between now and Lent.

Read on for a brief description of each group, and sign up for the one you want. Don't fret if you want to do more than one since all the groups sound fun and interesting! These groups may be offered again in the future, but for now please select only one.

These small groups are open to any confirmed member of the church. Thank you in advance for your participation, and a big "thank you" also to our gracious facilitators. Resources and materials for these new small groups were provided by a grant from the Good Shepherd Foundation.

Space is limited, and the sign-up deadline is Sunday, October 23.

Creative Spirits

Beginning with jewelry making and the creation of greeting cards, group members will select additional crafts to explore and decide how to use/donate some of their finished projects to benefit others in addition to keeping some for personal use. Facilitated by Terri Tokaz and Anne Mueller.

"I Had No Idea!" ... Discovering Columbia

Home to many historical, natural, religious, educational, and arts-related sites and attractions, Columbia is more than "Famously Hot!" This group will begin with a visit to the State House and grounds to check out the various monuments and discuss some of the historical events that have made Columbia and South Carolina what they are today. Future activities will be guided by the interests of the group. Facilitated by Don Caughman.

You'll Get Through This: Hope and Help for Turbulent Times

Members will find a caring, confidential, non-judgmental, supportive, and intimate environment to share, vent, offer support and collaborate on difficult situations that affect our everyday lives, such as grief, job-related problems, child rearing, financial stability, caring for parents or mates, empty nesting, and changes in personal life circumstances. Facilitated by Anna-Marie Plyler.

Explore the New Testament

"Discover how historical research can illuminate the New Testament -- the most widely read book in history -- in this riveting course that combines biblical scholarship, archaeological discoveries, and literary analysis." (Quote from "The Great Courses" concerning this lecture series on DVD by a prominent New Testament scholar, author, and professor.) At each meeting the group will view a short lecture on various topics and have questions/discussion. The first lecture will be "The Early Christians and Their Literature." Members will help select additional lectures for future meetings. Facilitated by Don Hyatt.

Walking the Way

Walking is not only a great form of exercise but also a great spiritual discipline. After hearing words of scripture about the journey, group participants will decide together when and where they walk. The goal is to log enough miles as a group total to equal walking to Lutheridge. We will walk at a moderate pace. All ages are welcome! Facilitated by Karen Lucas.
